Listen To Your Mother

Cast, Photo c/o LTYM web site
In honor of Mother's Day, the 3rd annual Listen To Your Mother-St. Louis production took place at St. Luke's Hospital last weekend. Mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons bravely shared heartwarming tales related to motherhood. Some stories kept the audience in stitches, while other anecdotes elicited tears. The overall messages of hope and courage resonated with each listener. (On a side note, the speakers also looked fabulous in their Luichiny and Diba True shoes!)

One standout performance came from Joanne Grana, a self-proclaimed "disabled diva," who spoke about her late mother's tireless love and encouragement as Joanne grew up with cerebral palsy. Even with a broken hip, Joanne's mother's first concern was caring for Joanne. Another memorable sketch came from Jenny Beatrice's hysterical take on raising a daughter with a fondness for tattoos and body art. The showstopper, however, came from Paul Gilbride. The proud stay-at-home father gave a heart-wrenching account of his personal battle with depression, and how those experiences gave him the ability to support his teenage son when he also struggled with mental illness. His bravery in sharing painful memories with humility earned him a standing ovation.

Missed the show? Don't worry, 2015's St. Louis set will be available on YouTube over the summer. For now, you can watch past shows right here. You can also purchase a collection of funny, thought-provoking musings on motherhood in the book, Listen To Your Mother: What She Said Then, What We're Saying Now.
